The Arts District in downtown Dallas provides some great venues for travelling exhibits as well as the big music stars. The Dallas Center for Performing Arts, open in October 2009, only adds to the potential to draw in large crowds.
Deep Ellum, also in Dallas, is a perfect venue for appreciating the urban art scene; due to the city’s relaxed stance on graffiti there are many murals dotted around the city.
The Southtown Arts District in San Antonio has a rich cultural history, reflected by its assorted mix of galleries. Down the road on the south bank of San Antonio River is La Villita Historic Arts Village. It is a beautiful location where you can soak up the quaint buildings and peaceful atmosphere.
Austin
In Austin, South Congress Avenue is filled with independent restaurants, artsy boutiques and live music venues. Many say it is the place to go to enjoy the true Austin experience.
Houston
The Houston Museum District is a popular venue. Composed of 18 individual museums in a 1.5 mile square radius it attracts over 9 million visitors a year. Many of the museums and galleries provide free admission year round as well as educational programs for both children and adults.
Art Events in Texas
Museum District Day is held in September in Houston to raise the profile of all its cultural organizations. People can catch a free shuttle bus taking them to all the venues, which are free to enter.
Similar to the Museum District Day, the Dallas City Arts Festival is held in June and offers the same. People can also enjoy food and free music. It is a great event for taking the children to.
Contemporary Art Month, held in July but moving to March in 2010, seeks to raise the profile of local artists. Over 70 venues host the artists’ work, at the same time providing educational programs for the public.
Well known galleries in Texas
The Dallas Museum of Art has an impressive collection of Egyptian and Nubian art as well as masterworks by artists such as Monet, Degas and van Gogh.
In Houston, the Museum of Fine Arts is the 5th largest museum in the U.S. with works spanning over six millennia and includes works from around the world. The museum provides many weekend activities available for all the family.
Also in Houston, the Contemporary Arts Museum seeks to encourage appreciation of the visual arts via its educational programs and events. The building was designed by Gunnar Birkets in 1972.
The Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, responsible for Contemporary Art Month, holds 20 exhibitions a year. Just down the road from the Blue Star is the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), which is the only museum in South Texas to hold over 20,000 pieces in its permanent collection. There is an noteworthy amount of Asian, Latino and Ancient art.
Hosted in Austin, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is dedicated to showcasing the history of Texas. It includes interactive exhibits, a special effects theatre and an IMAX screen. As one would imagine, it is a popular place with the children.

From Dallas, Annette Lawrence has work held in many private and public collections including the Dallas Cowboys stadium and the Museum of Fine Art. She is well known for her sculptures and has recently moved out to Australia to set up residency.
Arthello Beck Jr. (1941-2004) is best known for his art that dealt with the American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. He painted in oils, watercolors and charcoal.
Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) came to fame during the 1950s conversion from abstract expressionism to pop art. He is best known for the way he combined painting and sculpture using non-traditional materials.
