SoHo, New York Art Galleries

SoHo is short for South of Houston Street and is in the centre of Downtown, New York. With Houston Street to the north, the galleries are found in-between there and Canal Street to the South, Lafayette Street to the East and West Broadway to the west. Galleries include:

Ronald Feldman Fine Arts

Founded in 1971, gallery artists have participated in more than 2,000 national and international exhibitions. The gallery showcases paintings, sculpture, installations, drawings, prints and performances.

Arcadia Fine Arts

The Gallery represents emerging and internationally renowned artists who specialize in contemporary, representational art.

York’s Shona Gallery

Shona tribal art explores the world of spirituality, mythology and reality, in turn representing the culture of Africa. It is said to be one of the most influential art movements coming out of Africa, and is said to have influenced Picasso. The Gallery also displays paintings, fabrics, masks, jewelry, instruments, crafts, iron and wooden sculptures.

Gallery Revel

Many of the artists represented by the gallery are trained in the classic styles of impressionism and realism. Invariably, the artists sit on an international stage; blending their work with contemporary concepts gives their work a unique outlook.

Ward Nasse Gallery

Warde Nasse art gallery features an extensive number of emerging artists. There is a wide variety of artistic styles but a focus on contemporary art. The gallery covers 2,000sq feet and accommodates about 15,000 visitors per year.

June Kelly Gallery

Specializing in contemporary paintings, drawings, sculpture and photography, the gallery represents a diverse group of emerging, mid-career and established artists. The Gallery has received numberous reviews from publications in the art world including ARTnews and Art in America.

OK Harris

Founded by Ivan Karp in 1969, OK Harris was at the forefront of the Photo Realist movement. They were the first to exhibit work by Duane Hanson, Deborah Butterfield, Manny Farber, Richard Pettibone, Robert Cottingham, Robert Bechtle, Marilyn Levine, Nancy Rubins, Malcolm Morley, Luis Jiminez, Jake Berthot, Jack Goldstein, Porfirio DiDonna, Al Souza and Arman. The gallery now exhibits contemporary art and photography, and on occasion showcases antiques and collectibles. Its main focus is to exhibit art that is significant in any current climate; social environmental or other.

Well known art galleries in SoHo

The Painting Center is a not-for-profit, artist run gallery that hosts contemporary painting exhibitions. It has two spaces: a 1,000 sq foot space for the main exhibitions and a smaller 200 sq foot space known as the Project Room. Its core value is to welcome all thoughts and expressions, regardless of how popular they are in the art market. The Center also plays a role in public outreach programs to entice more people to contemporary art.

The Drawing Center is the only not-for-profit organization in the U.S. to focus on exhibiting drawings. The artists on display vary greatly from masters to emerging locals. The Drawing Center has put on more than 230 exhibitions and has been hosted at various prestigious institutions around the world including Tate Britain and the Museum of Contemporary art in Sydney, Australia.

The Children’s Museum of the Arts is for children from ten months to twelve years. It has been hugely successful with locals and tourists due to its family-friendly content.

The New Museum of Contemporary Art is the only museum in New York City dedicated exclusively to presenting contemporary art from around the world. They have featured artists from countries including Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cameroon, China, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Germany, Poland, Spain, South Africa, Turkey and The United Kingdom. The architecture of the building itself is a masterpiece, designed by Tokyo-based Sejima and the New York-based firm Gensler.
