Well known art galleries in Santa Fe
Celebrating the work of O’Keeffe, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum holds over 140 paintings, watercolors, pastels and sculpture, which is the largest collection of her art anywhere in the world.
New Mexico Museum of Art is one of the four in New Mexico that is run by the state. The Museum is the oldest in New Mexico. It’s best known for how it reflects the mix of Native American and Spanish Colonial design. It holds over 20,000 pieces of art.
The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum is both a college and a museum. The Museum focuses on Native American art. One of its particularly interesting facets is the Allan Houser Art Park, which is an outdoor sculpture garden.
Site Santa Fe, also known as SITE, is a not-for-profit organization, which has held world-renowned contemporary art exhibitions featuring numerous famous artists. It is seen as one of the leading influences in the Southwest U.S.
Art Events in Santa Fe
The Folk Art Market is now the largest international folk art market in the world. Its mission is to support folk artists worldwide giving them a platform to develop and exchange ideas. Every July, over 100 select folk artists from more than 40 countries showcase their art to an international audience.
Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival is held annually in May. Top Native American artists display and sell their work to art lovers from all over the world. Often more than 170 artists attend from 40 tribes and pueblos.
The Santa Fe Film Festival, usually held around December time, showcases local New Mexican film, and new American and foreign film including revivals, retrospectives, independent productions and mini-festivals.
Artists associated with Santa Fe
Georgia O’Keeffe (1887-1986) played a key role in delivering an American influence to European art. At the time, the fact that she was a woman was a particularly impressive feat. She is best known for her depiction of landscapes, flowers, rocks, shells and animal bones. Her style was a mixture of abstraction and realism.
Antonio Roybal is a fine art painter and sculptor mixing religion, metaphysics and modern symbols such as toys. Much of his work is influenced by Jan Van Eyck and his followers.
Gustave Baumann’s (1881-1971) work has appeared in many prominent institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the New Mexico Museum of Art. He is known as a master of woodcuts and marionette-making, depicting Southwestern landscapes and lifestyles.
