Well known galleries in San Antonio
Hosting over 20 exhibitions a year, the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center (BSCAC) was established to replace the cancellation of a contemporary arts exhibit at the San Antonio Museum of Art. Often referred to as the Blue Star Complex, it houses many arts-orientated developments including performance spaces, galleries and artists’ work spaces.
The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) was founded in 1980 as a non-profit organization in order to promote the art and culture of Chicano, Latino and Indigenous people. Its educational program falls into Dance, Literature, Media Arts, Theater Arts, Visual Arts and Music.
Founded in 1950, the McNay Art Museum was the first modern art museum in Texas. The works focus primarily on 19th and 20th century European and American art for artists such as Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.
The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) is the only museum in South Texas with over 20,000 objects in its permanent collection and holds a large collection of Asian, Latino and Ancient art. You will also find work from famous artists including Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and Wayne Thiebaud.
Art Events in San Antonio
Held annually in July but moving to March in 2010, San Antonio holds the Contemporary Art Month where art is hosted throughout 70 venues all over the city. The event seeks to raise the profile of local artists whilst providing public education programs.
The Blue Star Complex is credited with the establishment of Contemporary Art Month. The Blue Star Complex also hosts First Friday, which is essentially a block party centered around contemporary art. Held on the first Friday of every month, the crowd it draws are mostly people in their 20’s. It provides an outlet for lesser known artists to show their work. There is also an art walk that occurs on the same day, which takes people to various galleries in the Southtown district.
Artists from San Antonio
Carl Hoppe (1897-1981) was well known locally but reached international recognition after his death. His speciality was impressionist landscapes.
Robert William Wood (1889-1979) is also known for his landscape pieces. He emigrated from England and soon became renowned for his work. Much of his art has been reproduced including “October Mom”, which sold over 1 million copies in two years.
