Queens, New York Art Galleries

On the western side of Queens, Long Island City has the second highest concentration of museums and galleries in New York City. It is a major cultural destination with something always going on.

Maspeth is a smaller region encompassing lesser known galleries. The art here is as diverse as the ethnic backgrounds of the community.

Well known galleries in Queens

The P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center is named after the former public house in which it is housed. It is the second largest non-profit contemporary arts center in the United States. Although somewhat of a mature institution, the museum continually delivers cutting edge exhibitions. P.S. 1 is now an affiliate of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and is a must visit for tourists interested in the arts.

The SculptureCenter, also based in Long Island City, is dedicated to contemporary and innovative sculpture. It was founded in 1928 by artists that wanted to push the boundaries of sculpture. The center exhibits work by emerging, established, national and international artists. It also hosts public programs, lectures and performances.

The Queens Museum of Art commits to presenting the highest quality visual art and focuses its public education programs top the people in the New York metropolitan area; in particular the residents of Queens. Many of its exhibits relate to the multi-cultural neighborhood and urban lifestyle of its inhabitants.

Art Events in Queens

In the summer, the Socrates Sculpture Park, and the Museum of the Moving Image host a free outdoor film series of movies from around the world. The screenings are on the banks of East River in Long Island City. The event provides a great atmosphere as people relax outside whilst watching the big screen.

Also held in Long Island City during July and August, is the P.S. 1 warm up party. Every Saturday afternoon there is a dance party in the museum's courtyard attracting people of all ages. Each year, an architect designs a giant installation for everyone to admire or contemplate.

Artists from Queens

Isamu Noguchi (1904-1908) is known for his sculpture and architectural achievements. He converted a photo-engraving plant into an art workshop, which is now a museum dedicated to his works called the Noguchi Museum. The museum is 24,000 square foot and includes an outdoor sculpture garden.

Joseph Cornell (1903-1972) became famous for constructing arrangements of common objects, photographs and Victorian knick-knacks inside of glass-fronted boxes. His idea was to combine Constructivism with Surrealism. He was also an experimental filmmaker.
