Pittsburgh Three Rivers Arts Festival, held in June, runs for 17 days and is a mix of free art, live music, food and other festival activities. Artists from all over the country come to exhibit the work. The free outdoor concerts are also extremely popular.
Artists from Pittsburgh
Andy Warhol is recognized as one of the prolific leaders of the pop art movement. He was also a record producer, author and socialite. Many of his works are in the Andy Warhol Museum. His earlier pieces were of iconic American products such as Campbell’s Soup and Coca Cola. He also painted portraits of stars like Marilyn Monroe, Muhammed Ali and Elizabeth Taylor. His last series revolved around his Catholic beliefs, and perhaps his most famous work, The Last Supper cycle is perceived by many as his greatest.
A follower of Andy Warhol, Burton Morris is an admired pop artist; his work appearing on many well known products such as Zippo, Perrier, Absolut Vodka and Coors Beer. Many celebrities collect his work including John Travolta, Kanye West and Brad Pitt.
Mary Cassat (1844-1926) lived much of her life in France with friends such as Edgar Degas and famous impressionist painters of the time. Her work focused on the social and private lives of women and how they bonded with their children.
