Quickly Learn About Pastel Paintings for Sale

Pastel is produced by combining colored powder, also known as pigment, and an inert binder.

By mixing different ratios, it is possible to produce pastels of differing levels of hardness. The higher the amount of inert binder compared to the colored powder, the harder the pastel. Harder pastels are less likely to smudge, but the colors are not as bright.

In addition to hardness grades, any given pastel painting for sale may be produced using:

  • pastel pencils, which have a pastel lead
  • oil pastels, which have a wax binder, making a soft, buttery consistency
  • water-soluble pastels, which can be diluted with water to give a more thinned-out effect.

Also look for pastel in paintings for sale labeled as ‘mixed-media’.

Many artists enjoy using pastels because of the bright colors, and the immediacy of effect on the canvas.

How to take care of your Pastel Painting

If your painting has been sprayed with a fixative it will be more resistant to being rubbed and dirtied. In either case, it is best to store the pastel painting behind a glass frame. We recommend talking to a trusted framer for further advice.

Keep your acrylic painting out of direct sunlight.

Display or store your acrylic painting below standard room temperature (21°C).

Keep your pastel painting in a dust-free environment.

Do not apply pressure to the pastel paint.

Pastel Painting a Short History

Modern pastel painting started in the 18th century, although cave paintings were drawn from a basic type of pastel.

Some Famous Pastel Painters

Edgars Degas (1834-1917) is perhaps the most notable pastel painters of all time. His portrayals of ballet dancers and race horses are highly regarded.

Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1704-1788) was one of the early adopters of Pastel and inspired many followers. He brought fame to the media as well as respect.

Mentored and influenced by Degas, Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) is well known for her paintings of the lives of women and their bonds with their children.
