The Warehouse District used to be buzzing with artists and small galleries during the 1980’s and 90’s, but an influx of wealthy residents pushed up the rent causing many to disperse elsewhere to places like Lowertown District and Northeast Minneapolis. However, there are still many high-end galleries that reside in the Warehouse District and non-profit organizations. Galleries include:
The Gallery exhibits contemporary art in all mediums, including paintings, sculpture and photography specializing in work from artists based in the Midwest region of the U.S.
Circa educates its visitor on a diverse amount of contemporary art, making it easier for them to discern which art would be best for them. They represent talented artists from all over the U.S. showing varied styles of contemporary art through seven exhibitions each year.Just south of the Warehouse District, in Downtown west, you will find many historical buildings occupied by galleries and artist studios. A lot of the time, there are multiple studios in the same building generating a highly creative buzz. The ambience offers a cool place to hang out both day and night. Galleries Include:

The gallery provide two exhibition spaces, totaling 6,500 square feet. The focus of the collection is talented artists from the region.
Well known galleries in Minneapolis
The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is the largest museum in the city and provides free admission. It features an encyclopaedic collection of art from around the world that spans five millennia. It has a particularly impressive Asian art collection including Chinese architecture, jades, bronzes and ceramics.
Considered to be on the United States’ big 5 museums of modern art, the Walker Art Center features work by Picasso, Moore and Giacometti. Recently, the Walker Art Center collaborated with the Minneapolis Park Board to build the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. It has 40 permanent art installations and several temporary pieces.
Specializing in early American modernism, ceramics, and Asian furniture, The Weisman Art Museum is based on the University of Minnesota campus. Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the building is an interesting sight.
Art Events in Minneapolis
In May, Art-a-whirl is an art crawl where 400 art studios are opened to the public. There are also performing, visual and educational groups running events throughout the Northeast District.
The Stone Arch Festival is held on the scenic riverfront in June and hosts over 250 artist booths. Admission is free and it is a great day out for the family.
The Uptown Art Fair has been running for over 40 years and is one of the largest fine art fairs in the U.S. All types of art are on display but one of the key missions of the event is to showcase quality over quantity.
Artists from Minneapolis
Herbjørn Gausta (1854-1924) is known for his landscapes, portraits and country-based paintings. There are many of his paintings in the Fine Arts Collection of Luther College.
Erik Larsen has done illustration for well known comic books such as Superman, the Fantastic Four and Aquaman. He is best known for creating the character called the Dragon.
Terrance Lindall’s surreal art has featured on the covers of numerous publications and has been showcased in the Brooklyn Museum, Hudson River Museum, and the Museum of the Surreal and Fantastic.
