The Dean Jensen Gallery has a reputation for being one of Milwaukee's finest commercial art spaces.
Established in 1969 by Bill DeLind. The collection is comprised of fine art drawings, plein air and post impressionist paintings, and lithographs and etchings.
Elaine Erickson morphed from the earlier gallery, Studio 613 Fine Arts. Contemporary paintings, works on paper, and sculpture constitute the majority of the collection.
Well known galleries in Milwaukee
Milwaukee Art Museum is an architectural spectacle both for its beauty and engineering complexities. The museum’s $100 million Quadracci Pavilion has a sun breaker, named brise soleil in French, which expands to 217 feet across during the day, and folding into a tall, arched structure at night. There is a permanent collection of works by Old Masters as well as the nation’s largest German Expressionism, folk and Haitian art. The museum also hosts numerous exhibits throughout the year.
The Grohmann Museum showcases art that celebrates the evolution of human achievement and processes. The exhibit comprises over 700 paintings and sculptures from 1580 to the present – most of the work has been created by German and Dutch artists. There is a stunning rooftop sculpture garden that is a must visit.
Located on the Marquette University campus, the Haggerty Museum of Art showcases a variety of classical masterpieces and is free to the public. There are over 6,000 paintings, sculptures and photographs from the likes of Marc Chagall, Roy Lichenstein and Andy Warhol.
Art Events in Milwaukee
In June, Miller Lite runs a charity bike with proceeds going to the United Performing Arts Fund. The event is great fun, even for those not interested so much in the arts.
Also in June, held in the Milwaukee Art Museum grounds, is the Lakefront Festival of Art. It features a juried art contest, sculpture gardens, children’s art activities, artist demonstrations and lots of artist displays. There is also plenty of food and beverages on offer.
Artists from Milwaukee
David Lenz is known for his portraits of unsung Americans. He won the prestigious 2006 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, which is organized by the National Portrait Gallery. His oil painting was of his son Sam, who has Down syndrome, against the Wisconsin landscape. The name of the painting is Sam and the Perfect World.
Karl Priebe (1914-1976) won international recognition through his studies and paintings of wildlife and African-American culture.
