Galleries in London
One of the greatest things about art in London is the numerous free-to-get-into venues. London art galleries display some great collections by world-famous artists, both modern and classical.
The Tate Modern, which was formerly a power station, has a huge collection of modern art covering the whole of the 20th century onwards. It has permanent and temporary exhibitions with a focus on pivotal movements of art in the 20th century. It is extremely busy on weekends so if you can, go on a weekday.
The National Gallery holds an impressive collection of Western European art from mid-13th century to 1900. It is worth visiting in multiple trips as there is a lot to take in and admire.
The Tate Britain’s collection of pre-Raphaelites and neo-classicists is particularly remarkable, as is the collection of art from the Tudors. The further you go into the gallery, the better it gets.
The National Portrait Gallery exhibits a collection of portraits, mostly of royalty and other historical figures.
Responsible for bringing the Young British Artists to the fore, the Saatchi gallery in Chelsea is an ultra-modern gallery. There are many critics for and against the works displayed in the gallery. You are guaranteed that you won’t leave without seeing something that stirs some sort of emotion.
One of London’s top venues for contemporary photography is the Photographer’s Gallery. A broad range of photographic work is on show; the main aim is to continually take the discipline to new levels. There are year-round educational events and exhibits.
Art Events in London
London’s Affordable Art Fair is held twice in London, promoting contemporary art that falls under £3,000. The aim is to bring quality art to the market from artists that do not carry the premium of their reputation. Over 10,000 people attend each time taking advantage of the variety and affordability of what’s on offer. It is an ideal event to go to if you are just getting into art collecting.
Famous artists from London
Tracey Emin is part of the Young British Artists group (YBAs); her controversial work often dividing opinions. Her art is expressed through various forms including needlework, sculpture, drawing, video, photography and painting. Some of her famous pieces include ‘My Bed’, which was an installation consisting of her dirty laundry and unused condoms, and ‘Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995’, which was a tent with the names of her sexual partners, amongst others, embroidered into the inner canvas.
Another member of the YBAs, Damien Hirst is arguably the richest living artist in the world. He is well known for displaying dead animals encased in formaldehyde. Death is often the central theme of his art - many people recognize his diamond-studded skulls. In September 2008, a collection of his work was sold by Sotheby’s for a record-breaking £111 million.
