The Houston Museum District is a collection of museums, galleries and other cultural organizations. Most offer free access, and collectively, a crowd of over 9 million are drawn to the Museum District annually. There is an dedicated, successful drive to educate people of all ages about the arts via seminars, festivals and interactive sessions.
Located in downtown Houston, The Theatre District is the second biggest in the U.S. next to New York, with over 14,000 seats available for live performance and movies. The world-class theatres and facilities attract many prominent shows and famous actors.

Art Events in Houston
In September, Museum District Day raises the awareness of its cultural organizations by offering free admission to participating museums and galleries with a free shuttle bus taking people from venue to venue.
Day of the Dead is held each year from October to November by the Lawndale Center. Celebrating and improving peoples’ awareness of Mexican tradition, local artists are able to display their work to the public in a museum quality setting.
The Big Show is also an annual event run by the Lawndale Art Center in July. It is an open invite for artists to enter into a juried exhibition, helping lesser-known artists gain exposure.
Well known galleries in Houston
The Museum of Fine Arts, at the time of writing, is the 5th largest museum in the U.S. The works on display span 6,000 years of history from around the world. There are many activities available to get the public involved.
The Contemporary Arts Museum is a non-profit organization that encourages people to look further into the visual arts. It does this via exhibitions and public education programs - many topics look at where contemporary art is going. The building, designed by Gunnar Birkerts in 1972, is in itself a work of art.
Another famous designer, Isamu Noguchi, produced The Cullen Sculpture Garden. The grounds offer a peaceful place to meditate on some extraordinary sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is a popular place for locals and tourists.
Lawndale Art Center is focused on displaying contemporary works from local artists. The gallery hosts 20 exhibits a year, which involve up to 500 artists. It also holds informal talks and special events. At least one third of the board is made up of artists and the gallery relies on volunteers throughout the year to help it run successfully.
