New York Art Blogs

The New York Art Blogging Scene
New York is the undisputed capital of the art world. It should be no surprise that the combination of a busy, multifaceted art scene, and the renowned New Yorkers penchant for speaking their mind has led to New York art blogs being by featured far more often than any other city. That we actively pursue a selection policy that tries to include art blogs from as wide a range of writing style, subjects, and geographical areas as possible, and still ended up with an imbalance towards New York art blogs, shows how strong the scene really is.

New York Art Blogs Profiled on Art Connect
James Wagner is part of the Artcat team. The James Wagner art blog is used to cover art and progressive politics. The majority of entries take the form of highly informative write-ups of exhibitions, most often in New York. Wagner’s ability to contextualise an event in terms of the wider art marketplace, makes for great high level coverage.

The DailyServing art blog is not based in New York, but entries quite often focus on the area. The world-wide coverage, provided by a skilled, multi-disciplined team which includes amongst its ranks artists, curators, galleries, art shows, schools and residencies, non-profits, and museums, combines well to provide a great daily entry.

Art Observed also covers world-wide coverage of the art scene. It seems a little counter-intuitive to us to take this approach is you are based in New York, but it seems to work in this art blogs favor. Certainly, the Art Observed art blog does a great job of cutting past the hype.

The artists at Graffiti Research Lab (GRL) experiment with urban-specific technology with a view to improving urban communication. The GRL art blog is a record of their activities. Established in New York, GRL now groups in countries throughout the world.

The Wooster Collective art blog was founded in 2001, when street art had very little exposure. Named after a part of New York, this art blog provides some fantastic photographs of street art.

Edward Winkleman is a New York art dealer. The Edward Winkleman art blog is by far that best blog by an art dealer. Winkleman’s willingness to talk about the artist / dealer relationship on his blog, and talk freely on a range of subjects is a refreshing approach.

John Haber’s art blog, New.York.Art.Crit, is a hugely impressive piece of work. Haber continuously produces a prodigious quantity of high quality content. Over a number of year’s New.York.Art.Crit has become less an art blog and more a treatise.

Arthur Whitman is a New York artist and art critic. His art blog The Thinking Eye showcases Whitman’s talent for writing reviews of New York art exhibitions.

Cara Phillips is a photographer, based in New York. Her art blog Ground Glass provides ongoing coverage of photography, incorporating everything from news, reviews, and in-depth editorials.

Joanne Mattera is an artist, based in New York, who paints geometric compositions, mainly using encaustic paint (pigment suspended in wax). The Joanne Mattera art blog does a great job of showcases the art that Mattera likes, and providing advice to artists.

Art Vent’s author, Carol Diehl, holds the firm belief that for art to be compelling visually, it must be compelling conceptually. As an art blog Art Vent stands out by covering subjects that are often not covered elsewhere, and for the insight it provides into Diehl’s own art.

The Notes and Queries art blog focuses on the New York art scene, covering a range of artistic disciplines. The author, João Ribas, also features The Drawing Center, in New York, where he is a Curator.

The Oly’s Musings’ art blog is mainly centred on the New York art scene, where the main focus is news and reviews of art events. Olympia Lambert does a great job of promoting the art world in a way which newcomers will find accessible, whilst those more experienced will still find insightful.

Ethan Ham is a contemporary artist who holds an Assistant Professorship of New Media at the City College of New York. The Etham Ham art blog provides some great insight into the new media art scene, utilising high-quality photos and video to great effect.

Amanda Church is a contemporary artist based in New York. The Amanda Church art blog is used to showcase her art. Her oil on canvas art is inspired by coastal visits, and provides a nice distraction for readers with a busy schedule.

The High Low and In Between art blog, is produced by Christopher Saunders, who is an artist based in New York. The blog covers a range of subject, but we particularly enjoy the start to finish coverage provided of Saunders’ art work.

Hrag Vartanian’s art blog covers a range of visual art, including photography. Vartanian’s art blog wide perspective of a range of cultural scenes in New York ensure readers are provided with great variety.

Heart as Arena is produced by the New York art collector and curator, Brent Burket. The impeccable selection of photos, included in most entries, distinguish the Heart as Arena art blog.

Martin Bromirski’s art blog Anaba is another art blog which makes great use of photos. The blog as a feel of energy about, which is hardly surprising given that the New York artist, Bromirski, has managed to accrue over 1,200 entries since he started his blog in December 2005.

Tim Paul’s Museum Hours art blog offers critical reviews of current exhibitions at museums and galleries in New York City.

ARTmostfierce art blog follows the art collector and art enthusiast, Ruben Natal-San Miguel, as he journeys through the New York art scene. The art blog is frequently updated, and has a strong focus on emerging photography.

Catherine Spaeth’s art blog features art critique. Take a visit, enjoy the writing, and learn something new.

FutureModern art blog by George Rodart provides insight into where the art market is going. Articles encourage debate, with a focus on creativity and experimental art.

Christopher Reiger’s Hungry Hyaena art blog covers a variety of subjects, including art, conservation, ecology and philosophy. Great food for thought.

Modern Art Obsession art blog covers the art market as a whole, from art sales, to art news, to interviews. The enthusiasm emanating from the art blog is highly contagious.

Gary Petersen’s art blog provides personal coverage of this New York artist. It is a succinct blog that is in keeping with his art, which itself simplifies otherworldly depth and complexity.

Focusing on exhibits at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, Prolonged Hacking and Gnawing art blog is run by John Massier. Hallwalls’ concentrates on contemporary visual, media, performing and literary art.

NEWSGrist art blog has developed a lot of respect within the art blogging community, and its easy to see why. A nice focus on the politics of art, which often conjures up debates, along with opinion pieces, and profiles.
