Thinking About Art

The Thinking About Art blog is an ongoing exploration of the factors that constitute great art. Kirkland achieves this objective, inn part, by running reader participation projects through the blog. In keeping with this analytical theme, he also updates us of new acquisitions to his art collection. Entries also include posts about his own work, and posts that focus on the Washington D.C. art scene.

We love the innovative project called Artists “Review” Artists. An artist submits one photo of their work for another artist to review it. At the time of the write-up, the artist is anonymous to the assessor. Those reviewed can respond to the article; both the review and the response are then posted. This is an excellent place for an artist to gain exposure and get a public appraisal of their work, without the need for gallery representation or prior reputation.

Thinking About Art is also an enjoyable place to discover some new artists, particularly the art purchased for Kirkland’s personal collection. He obviously enjoys the analysis required to write about the factors that attract him to the art he collects.

The reviews and news for the Washington D.C. art scene provide variety, and are useful for readers living or visiting the area.

Overall, then, the title fits extremely well, and this art blog will be most enjoyed by those who appreciate thinking about art. The writing rarely requires the reader to have more than an interest in thinking about art in order for them to enjoy the entry, and is therefore recommended to those looking to take their first steps into the art world, as much as it is to those who have been around for longer.

This is a good example of how the Artists “Review” Artists project works.

About J.T Kirkland
Kirkland is a reductionist, often working with wood and house paint. His aim is to show the hidden beauty of an item, by modifying it slightly and stripping away anything that he does not consider essential.
