This art blog contains news, reviews, previews, and interviews. Coverage primarily focuses on the Liverpool art and culture scene, with posts occasionally covering UK or international art news.
One reason why we enjoy Art in Liverpool so much is that it covers an art scene at such a pivotal and transitional time. The symbiotic relationship of Art in Liverpool and the Liverpool art scene during this period, and the documentation of this period is something that merits further explanation…
Back in 1981, the Merseyside Development Corporation (MDC) was founded with the remit to regenerate Liverpool’s Docklands. At that time, the only vibrant aspect of the cultural scene was sport – namely the Liverpool and Everton football teams. The music scene was relatively poor. The art scene comprised of the Walker Art Gallery (the National Gallery of North England) which been around from 1877, and had become somewhat stale; the scene had little-to-nothing going on in its grass roots.
Things changed for the better in 1988 when Tate Liverpool was launched, and a good deal more when the gallery was given a major refurbishment in 1998 (the year in which the MDC was also wounded-down).
By the time Art in Liverpool was established, in 2004, Liverpool had a much more vibrant, confident, art scene. Tate Liverpool was firmly established, and the Walker Art Gallery’s exhibitions had become less formulaic, and had more popular. Progress had also been made at grass level: Not only did Art in Liverpool have an interesting art scene to talk about, but their potential audience undoubtedly covered a cross-section of society that 10 and certainly 20 years prior would not have been interested.
That Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture in 2008 served to consolidate what has been an intensely interesting period for the Liverpool art scene. We therefore enjoy this art blog as much for its historical interest, as for its ongoing new coverage – and think art lover visiting Liverpool, particularly those from outside the UK, will find this aspect adds to the enjoyment of their visit to this City.
