Some of our favourite entries on this eponymous art blog are those that showcase pieces of art that have captured the author’s attention. These entries introduce the pieces, and then let the art speak for itself.

Entries also covers the art market, covering subjects like ‘how to be a successful artist’, and ‘what the financial outlook is for the art world’. There is a lack of good quality, common sense information available to artists on this sort of subject. We find it in keeping with Mattera’s nature that she has taken the time required to cover such subjects so well.

The subtitle to this art blog reads “Guaranteed Biased, Myopic, Incomplete and Journalistically Suspect”. Self-effacing maybe, but most good quality art blogs, and newspaper commentary for that matter, can be described this way. We cannot agree with myopic aspect though: Mattera is far too outgoing, and positive for this description.

A measure of this art blog is how popular it is with the blogging community, with almost all entries acting as the basis for further discussion. By covering two important, but under-covered subjects, Mattera has developed one of the must read art blogs.

We like this article:
Aqua Wynwood, 17th December 2008

Why we like it:
Mattera gives an overview of Aqua Wynwood; a booth-style fair that features around 50 exhibitors. Mattera guides us through the show, posting images of the art that caught her attention.

About Joanne Mattera
Joanne Mattera is an artist, based in New York, who paints geometric compositions, mainly using encaustic paint (pigment suspended in wax).

Simple geometry features a lot in Mattera’s work, whilst the richness of the encaustic paint gives a thick, layered surface, deep in colour. We like the way she describes her work as being ‘lush minimalism’.

Mattera produced a book called ‘The Art of Encaustic Painting’, which is the reference book for painting in this medium; it provides history, images, and technical information about this type of art.
