Ethan Ham is a contemporary artist who holds a Assistant Professorship of New Media at the City College of New York. Ham’s work is inspired by electronics, kinetics, sculpture, installation, and the internet – many of the entries on the blog feature at least one of these themes.
Ham has worked on a variety of projects, many of them using the internet as a canvas. A couple of examples:
• The Anthroptic project: A facial recognition program was used to scan the popular photo site, Flickr, in order to identify faces – sometimes in inanimate objects. It is described as the equivalent of looking for faces in the clouds. Each photo has inspired a story, written by Science fiction author, Benjamin Rosenbaum.
• Self-Portrait, again using facial recognition software on Flickr. This time the software identifies faces that have a close match to Ham’s face. The project aims to see if the combination of these images can compose his portrait.
Ham’s access to great information sources, and mastery of his subject matter result in a steady stream of insightful entries. The use of high-quality photos and videos, used throughout this art blog, make it one of the most effective communicators around.
We would recommend everyone to check this blog out, as not only a great source of information but also a good place to seek inspiration.

Why we like it:
It might not sound interesting, but these pieces of work using pencils, pens and crayons as the medium, show real creativity (and nimble fingers).
