The Intrepid Art Collector blog is comprised of news, events, and articles, all of which focus on buying and appreciating art on a budget. The theme of not needing an unlimited cash-fund in order to own an impressive art collection is a re-occuring one, with many entries pointing to works-of-art or art-exhibits where there is an opportunity to get value for money.

The great advice provided in The Intrepid Art Collector’s entries is backed-up by some the ad hoc advice (always promptly) provided to anyone who raises a question in the comments section.

It is easy to recommend The Intrepid Art Collector to art collectors, but that would overlook the value this blog has to offer to those on the ‘supply-side’ – by which we would include those working in art museums. Unless your surname is Hirst (*1), Serota (*2), or Saatchi (*3), we recommend slotting The Intrepid Art Collector in your RSS reader today.

(*1) Mr Hirst cannot be accused of underplaying his hand
(*2) Despite what the Stuckists say, Sir Nicolas Serota has been an excellent Director of the Tate
(*3) Mr Saatchi buys and the price goes up; kind of a nice way to collect art

We like this article:
Into the Woods: Sarah Wilmer, 3rd December 2008

Why we like it:
It is a recommendation to view (and possibly buy) Wilmer’s work. There is a good synopsis of Wilmer’s photographs along with a few images. There’s also a useful link to where it is possible to purchase some limited edition prints.

About Hunter
Hunter’s book, also called The Intrepid Art Collector, continues the theme from her blog. It explains what to look for when buying a piece of art and how to ensure you get a fair price. It is particularly useful for those wanting to start collecting fine-art but don’t know where to begin.

About Lisa Hunter
Lisa Hunter, based in Montreal, is an arts journalist and author of the book, The Intrepid Art Collector. She has appeared in many notable publications including The Wall Street Journal and Elle Canada, giving advice on buying art and her thoughts on the art market in general. She’s also been on the radio and has sat on various art panels.

Hunter studied art in college and has since become a major collector of affordable art – not spending more than $7,000 for any one item. Her inspiring collection is a mixture of crafts, prints, paintings and photographs.
