NEWSgrist is a mix of short profiles, art reviews, debates and opinions focusing primarily on the politics of art. Many of the posts include extractions from other sources. Censorship issues and intellectual property rights – subjects Garnett is obviously well used to dealing with as an artist – are discussed frequently on the site.

Garnett is keen for the reader to concentrate on the content, rather than being distracted by any singular form. The blog is praised by many, such as Tyler Green and Edward Winkleman, for the way it blurs the boundaries between artist and commentator, blog and work of art.

About Joy Garnett
Joy Garnett is a well-known artist, based in New York.

Garnett’s art looks at the contrast between media photography and painting, both in terms of the preparation behind the image and also the contemplation of the work. Sourcing digital-photos from the internet, she uses oil on canvas or ink on paper to transform the image to the point of abstraction. The goal is to decontextualize the original subject, freeing the viewer to reflect more deeply over the work than they would if they were simply browsing over the multitude of images available on the web.

Garnett’s work has stirred up some controversy in its time; in particular her famous piece called Molotov. The image had been sourced from a photo taken by Susan Meiselas in 1979. Due to a potential legal battle, Garnett was forced to remove the painting from her website, but not before the art world had picked up on what was going on. The support that ensued from her peers, has led to Garnett becoming a popular figure in her field of work.
