The Stephen Art-East art blog features reviews of exhibitions that Harwood has attended, Harwood’s own art, and varied commentary of events or art that have captured Harwood’s attention. Whilst the blog predominately focuses on art, other subjects (music being one re-occurring topic) also feature.
Harwood professes a deep-rooted infatuation for art, and it is obvious from his blog entries that this is no idle claim. The zeal is there for all to see in his writing, and this is particularly the case in his exhibition reviews. Take, for example, the 29th June 2008 entry, titled ‘The Worst Paintings in London’. In this piece, Harwood sets out why he finds all but one of the paintings at a certain BP Portrait Award exhibition to be awful.
We are not great believers of artist art critics who continuously run down other artists. Often, the artist is just venting their own frustration and jealousies. Harwood’s criticism is cuttingly phrased, but it is also balanced and well thought-out. As a reader, you may not always agree with Harwood, but in such cases you will find his commentary challenging your convictions.
The overall result is an incisive, well thought-out, and fluently delivered art blog.
We like this article:
Critical Perspectives on September 29th 2008.
Why we like it:
The piece takes to task a particularly lazy review of a Rothko exhibition by contrasting it to two other reviews – effectively showcasing Harwood’s own critical style in the process.
